Learning Objectives
  • Updates on changes to HIPAA regulations assuring no-cost medical records and delayed enforcement of Cures Act for “information blocking” violations
  • Methods to assure your clients obtain low-cost records in the meantime, despite misinformed or distorted opinions of providers and contractors
  • Prepare for coming changes by testing online patient portals to obtain no-cost records
  • Specifics of how to obtain complete records sets

Summary

The promise of no-cost electronic medical records has been delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic and adoption of changes in the HIPAA regulations. The Department of Health and Human Services is delaying enforcement of the Cures Act for violations known as “information blocking.” The enforcement date is unknown, but possibly as early as late 2021.

Roger Leslie will present current methods to assure that your clients will obtain low-cost records in the meantime, regardless of some misinformed or distorted opinions from health care providers or their contractors.

It is also important to prepare for the coming changes by testing online methods for obtaining no-cost records through online patient portals. DHHS continues to promise that violators in the near future will be penalized and that complete electronic medical records will be available online. Specifics of how to obtain complete records sets will be discussed.
